The Big Bang Theory- The Guitarist Amplification

bigbag_castrockbandRemember the days when there would be a storyline that included everyone on The Big Bang Theory?  I do, it was just last season.  I miss those times.  I don’t know that I dislike the whole Leonard/Penny relationship, after all it has given hope to millions of nerds all over the world, but it has taken away from what made this show so great.  I’m not going to so so far as to say it isn’t still great, but it is drifting away from that place.

Penny, Leonard, and Sheldon are sitting around playing the board game that Sheldon invented, Research Lab when it comes up that Penny is having a musician friend from back home who she’s had some sort of THE BIG BANG THEORYrelationship with coming to sleep on her couch for a while.  Leonard is unhappy with this arrangement which leads to a huge fight with Penny.  Sheldon can’t seem to handle the fighting so he starts blending ice to drown out the sound of the yelling.

It turns out that Sheldon can’t handle any sort of fighting around him.  It reminds him of his parents when he was a child.  As the fight goes on it gets worse and worse for Sheldon. Neither Penny nor Leonard will give in as both think they are right.  Leonard can’t believe that Penny thinks it’s ok for someone who’s seen her naked to sleep in her apartment, and Penny can’t believe that Leonard should have a problem with it.  Sheldon heads down to The Cheesecake Factory to try and solve the problem.  He want’s Penny to apologize.  When she refuses he asks Leonard to do the same, but he also refuses.  Sheldon looks for other places to stay.  He first tries Raj’s apartment, but he is driven away by the fighting between Raj and his parents over Raj’s web cam.  Next he tries Howard’s house, but is driven away by the fighting between Howard and his mother before they even open the door to let him in.  Looks like the comic book store is the only place he can find solitude.

Penny and Leonard arrive at the comic book store and after buying him a robot and a comic book along with the promise that they will all go home and everything wil be alright they leave.  In the end PEnny’s friend sleeps on the guys couch and everything is ok.

Thoughts and Observations:

  • I love it ANYTIME Sheldon tells stories from his childhood in Texas.  It shines so much light on why he is the way he is.
  • Wolowitz explaining to Leonard why he shouldn’t break up with Penny, “But if she dumps you, she’ll have a new boyfriend by tomorrow morning, and you’ll have a new girlfriend when you figure out how to build one.”
  • Raj upset with Wolowitz for skipping out on their cooking class, “‘Sorry’ doesn’t make up for the fact that I had to make chicken and rice with this vegan guy! Do you know what vegan chicken and rice is? Rice!”
  • “Leonard, when that woman moved in three years ago, I told you not to talk to her– and now look. We’re going to be late to the movies.”
  • Not near enough Raj and Wolowitz in this episode.  They were almost not present at all.

  1. I agree. I liked the original formula better. Didn’t these writers ever watch sitcoms of the past that died when characters got together? They under estimate the bond between friends and the
comedy of all these forces playing off one another.
